Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl. Let stand for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
  2. Add 4 cups flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, and salt into the yeast mixture. Mix well until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). Grease a baking sheet and sprinkle it with cornmeal.
  5. Shape the dough into 12 balls. Make a hole in the center of each ball and stretch it slightly. Place the bagels on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Beat the egg with 1 tablespoon water and brush the bagels with this mixture.
  7. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.
